Actually, I started with this way before Happy Feet hit the theaters. After watching that movie I wished I had made the story less convenient.

Superhero films are very popular now, so maybe, as a result of all the radiation, the penguins can develop special powers like super strength, invisibility, cold vision, or even the ability to fly.

Design some cool costumes.
