As much as I respect Doug, I'm not sure local agri can take the place of big agri with our current population. And if things get really bad, you can be sure that fed and state govts will control the distribution of even the smallest local farms. Forget "isolated locality" in times of great disruption. All primary resources get nationalized and rationed in times of stress (war, etc.). Moreover, in times of great economic upset, alternative currencies are often made illegal (think gold, 1933). Software private barter systems may be criminalized just as easily.
